Finally On-Site Again: maxon and the Cybathlon

Impressive technology and a wealth of emotions: This is the Cybathlon, which will take place from October 25 to 27 near Zurich, Switzerland. Here you can read everything you need to know about the competition.

For three days, teams from all over the world will attempt to overcome typical everyday obstacles in eight disciplines. The pilots, people with physical disabilities, will navigate a course using various technical aids: assistive robots, visual aids, arm prostheses, brain-computer interfaces, exoskeletons, bikes with muscle stimulation, leg prostheses, or wheelchairs.

The competition was initiated by ETH Zurich. The aim is to bring together research, industry, and societal engagement through the Cybathlon.

Since the event's inception in 2016, maxon has been a partner. "We believe that excellent and curious engineers can make the world a better place. That is why maxon has supported the Cybathlon from the beginning," says Eugen Elmiger, CEO of the maxon Group.

maxon Supports Teams Worldwide

Of course, this year we will again support various teams with know-how, drives, and financial contributions.

A few examples? We support the Enhanced Teams from the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences led by Silvia Rohner, who aim to be at the forefront with their wheelchair and exoskeleton. The "Enhanced Hybrid" team is breaking new ground in the truest sense: it combines an exoskeleton and a wheelchair, transforming from one to the other. Pilots Rolf Schoch and Thomas Krieg have high chances of winning.

Then there's SmartArM from France. Nathanaël Jarassé's team, a leading researcher in this field, pushes the technical boundaries in arm prostheses. Pilot Christophe Huchet operates a high-tech solution powered by DCX motors equipped with GPX gearboxes, controlled by an EPOS4.

Newcomers like Team RISE from Germany and EXOPRO UST from Taiwan want to challenge the favorites. Both teams have developed their competition devices in close contact with maxon.

You can also see other innovations from the maxon environment, such as a modified robot from Anybotix, which can load dishwashers, hang clothes, or even brush the pilot’s teeth as an assistant.
